3:30 – 4PM: Children’s Costume Contest (for participants 12 and under)

4 – 5PM: Adult’s Costume Contest (for participants 12 and older)

Costume Contest Rules

1. You must have a VIP or General Admission pass to enter the Costume Contest.
2. You must be registered to participate in the contest. Spots are limited.
3. Only one entry per person or group. Winners must be present to receive cash prizes. Cash prize will be split among contestants who enter in a group.
4. South Texas Horror Con is a family friendly event. Costumes must cover at least as much as a two piece swimsuit would.
5. Previous Winners of the STHC Costume Contest – to be eligible for a prize, costumes entered into the contest must not be the same costume (even if altered) that has won previous STHC costume contests.
6. Judges’ decisions are final.
7. Please be on time to the contest! Be ready to start lining up at least 15 minutes before the contest is scheduled to begin. Participants who are late may not be able to compete.

Weapons & Prop Policy

All weapons and props must comply with STHC Rules.

  • Actual firearms of any kind of not permitted.

  • Simulated weapons must be non-firing and have a brightly colored cap.

  • Live steel weapons are not permitted.

  • Smoke, pyrotechnics and projectiles are not allowed.

Violation of these rules will result in ejection from the convention.


Pre-judging allows the judges a chance to appreciate the detail that goes into constructing a handmade costume before the on stage portion of the Costume Contest. Costume Contest participants do not have to be pre-judged to compete in the Costume Contest. It is optional and only for participants with original creations.

Contestants who register for the pre-judging portion of the Costume Contest must meet the following criteria:

  • Costume must be at least 70% handmade by the wearer. Commissions may be pre-judged only if the creator is present.

  • Contestants may bring progress or reference pictures – only printed photos are permitted – CDs, USBs etc. will not be accepted. 

  • If you are pre-judged you must compete in the on-stage portion of the contest to be eligible for prizes. 

Pre-Judging will take place on Saturday Oct. 25th from 5:00PM – 5:30PM, right before the costume contest.

Anti-Harassment Policy

Everyone in attendance at South Texas Horror Con must adhere to our Anti-Harassment Policy.

South Texas Horror Con is committed to maintaining a fun and respectful environment for all attendees.  STHC prohibits any member of the staff, volunteers, exhibitors, and attendees from harassing and/or discriminating against anyone in attendance at STHC. Incidents of harassment and discrimination will be met with appropriate action including revoking passes without refund.

Harassment includes offensive verbal comments [related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion], sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention. Attendees asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.

If a participant engages in harassing behavior, STHC may take any action deemed appropriate, including warning the offender or expulsion from the convention without refund.

If, at any time, you feel you have been the victim of any form of harassment, please let a staff member or uniformed security officer know immediately. South Texas Conventions staff can be found in the Information Booth near the entrance of the Exhibit Hall , and security will be patrolling the floor at all times throughout the day.

STHC staff will be happy to help participants contact local law enforcement, provide escorts, or otherwise assist those experiencing harassment to feel safe for the duration of the convention. We value your attendance.

We expect all attendees and participants to follow these rules at the McAllen Convention Center and convention-related social events.
